Moving on U.P. part 1

by Meghan Klave Filed Under: resort life

Before all of the chaos, before all of the tourists, before the boats are even in the water…

A little deviation from my usual DIY projects and renovation stories today. Things have been a little hectic around here with helping B’s parents move out of the resort house so we can put our roots down. We are getting closer to opening day at The Twin Cedars Resort but I think it’s also an important time to look around and notice that this view is what it’s all about my friends.

moving up part 1-1

B and I both grew up on the water, and while anyone who lives in Michigan knows that a body of water isn’t any more than 2 miles away, we both longed to come back to it.

The Resort is proving to be quite an adventure and opening day is getting closer. So much to do, so much to share.

One showing on our house…and sold! Bam! just like that! It’s funny how some things just work out perfectly. B actually met the next owners and expressed our love for this house – they assured him they would take care of it and even offered him to visit. I could actually see him doing that…just to make sure things are going smoothly, give them tips and make sure they are feeding “our” deer.

We spent last weekend packing and moving some things. A rental unit close by is going to turn out to be very useful. We have some downsizing to do…our before home? – 3400 sqft…our after home? – about half that…or less. But as I’ve said before, there are only 3 of us. I’m actually ok with not having more toilets than people in our home…this is true for the resort house only. Our property consists of 5 cabins and 2 motel rooms and of course the resort house – alright so we’re back up to a lot of toilets 😉

Some incredible discoveries…B’s parents have some of the most beautiful, unique, awesome antique furniture I’ve ever seen. They’re giving us some of the smaller pieces. I cannot wait to clean them up and share them with you in all their glory. We feel very blessed to be here in an eventual piece of this history and a current part of the established traditions, while making our own along the way.

It was a gorgeous weekend, with bright sunny skies, warmer weather and returning wildlife…I just had to take a few photos and give you all a sneak peak of our little piece of heaven.

Moving UP part 1

moving up part 1-2

Sunday was actually the very first day that all of the ice was gone. The docks need to go in and the boats seem eager to start their summer. I know the grass doesn’t look like much now but I promise you this grass is the best in the world! It gets so green and soft…the kind you take your shoes off for and walk on it because you can. I hear the fishing is pretty good too 😉

moving up part 1-3

Ahhh…this is what it’s all about my friends…

I say, “How’s it feel comin’ home honey?”

“Good,” he says. A man of many words – ha. But that sums it up, I’d say.

9/25/15 – End of summer update: Now after the chaos, the tourists have dwindled and the boats have seen many a fish…

I look back on this post to see just how far we’ve come. All moved in…not to say we haven’t got a lot of renovation work to do on our house, but with fall here the slow down will lend us time to do it.

It’s been a great summer! We’ve learned so much. Met some of the most incredible, caring, interesting people that make this “the resort.” Gotten to spend time with others that have been friends for so many years, with stories that have been told countless times…they still make us belly laugh. Looking around after one of the many weekly summer cookouts and seeing smiles from ear to ear is really what it’s all about! I’m so proud to call this home.

Since the last owners only had some 45 years in we only have a little ways to go…

Yes, what an amazing journey it is!

Since this post went live back on April 30th 2015 I’ve written part 2 and part 3 – And I can assure you there will be so much more to this story! Be sure to subscribe to the blog below.

You’re making me want to come over and see for myself. I think summer might be a good time as any place where the lakes freeze over sounds a bit cold for me.

Haha Carrie – we still had a few icebergs on the northern great lakes just a few days ago. I think after this weekend they’ll be gone…finally. We love our 4 seasons here, but winter is definitely the longest.
