Not Just Another DIY Bathroom Renovation

by Meghan Klave Filed Under: the archives

Soooo much happening around here! Excited to share with you some of our DIY bathroom progress! I will say, however that this isn’t even half of what’s been going on. That’ll come later, but for now cheers to another DIY bathroom renovation!

Design elements for a fresh DIY bathroom renovation.Don’t you find it interesting when people make the proclamation that “it’s so great when you live in a house for awhile before you rip it all apart, that way you can really get to know the home and how you want it to be.” When we first moved in I would’ve completely disagreed. I couldn’t wait to start this process.

This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you click through and make a purchase, The Twin Cedars may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you…we appreciate your support. Full disclosure here.

Demo day, DIY bathroom reno 2015

And, oh when that first demo day arrived I was like a fully inflated balloon almost ready to pop with anticipation. I waited for this day and I couldn’t wait to swing that hammer! Then that day came and I spent hours banging nails out of individual plank boards that we decided to save and use later in one of the cabins.

Seriously did they need 36 nails in one board?

I’m happy to report I got the hammer swinging out of my system!

So I’ll start with the bathroom because that’s our main focus right now.

Just to give you a clear picture in your head about this…there is no shower in the house currently. Lucky for us we have 7 units that give us the opportunity to be fresh on the daily. And while I’m grateful for that, I mustn’t need to remind you that we live in the upper peninsula of Michigan…and it’s the second week of deer camp…a little “Da’ Yoopers” reference…not everyone will get it and that’s ok…just know that the snow’s a flyin’ and baby it’s cold outside!

Taking down signs-2015

See – proof! Bob taking the resort road signs down for the season…so handy and handsome – how’d I get so lucky?

Taking down signs 2015

While I’d like to say that I have adorable snow bunny pants and cute coat outfit to bundle up in, I’m usually on my way to the shower and not thinking of looking pretty…so big fluffy robe it is.

I’m pretty sure the guy staying in unit #7 the other night thought I was an escapee from the nut house in my oh-so-warm pink wrapped robe (thanks mom! I still got it!), while walking 2 little ankle biters to another unit for my nightly routine.

And did I mention I didn’t notice him standing there in the dark and about jumped out of my skin at his deep voiced “hello.” I mean really I thought it was Freddy Kruger in my nightmare at Twin Cedars.

My point? Renovations are not glamorous but so worth it!

Bob (my husband – in the past I’ve used the first letter of names but I’m pretty sure that anyone who wanted to find out who we are could, since we hope you do by checking out our resort…the whole reason for this crazy adventure – sorry about that tangent) and I spent almost an entire day shopping online for our bathroom vanity and fixtures.

Our DIY Bathroom Picks

You see we live at least an hour and a half from any home improvement/specialty stores. But really I’m thinking online shopping is the way to go as far as the amount of selection available. The downside? You have a HUGE selection available. That means you spend forever picking.

So our Saturday went something like this…get up have coffee and start scouring the interwebs. Pick a few, delete a few. Check some reviews, delete a few more. Click and compare. Then there were 2. I swear you guys I went back and forth on every possible good and bad thing about both vanities.

The conclusion? We went with 1 and the other we’ll use next year during our master bath reno – unless I change my mind cause there will probably be like 85,000 more to choose from. Speaking of, have you seen the DIY bathroom before and afters from our other house? I did take my advise on the do’s and don’ts of a bathroom remodel from that post.

Once the vanity was picked out we went for the rest of it and ordered the shower head and sink fixtures. Love them both!

That shower head is amazing! My advise for anyone looking to change it up is to get one with a long hose. Let’s be honest, with all of the bathrooms I clean at the resort now, the one thing I love is when a unit has a long hosed shower head – so easy to clean and I don’t get water everywhere during the rinse.

Also Bob would like me to mention that the base is a magnet…I’m pretty sure he thinks that’s the greatest thing since humanity stopped bathing in lakes…it is pretty cool!

What a classy little faucet handle, huh? It’s by Kohler. You can find the exact one we got here.

I also fancy this one! The single handle looks very farmhouse chic.

The final items. These tiles are going to look incredible!

As for “living in a house for awhile to get to know it before a complete overhaul”…I’d say is still really good advise. We’ve changed plans many times over the last 6 months and couldn’t be happier with our decisions – that wouldn’t have been the case had we rushed.

Looks great! Just was wondering where you purchased your tile from and if you could provide a link for that as well?! 🙂

Hi Aaron! The white subway tile is from Lowes by Allen & Roth, which seems to be a standard item that they carry. The octagon and accent tile was purchased from Home Depot. They often change their stock so it’s hard to know if they have it available all the time. Also, because tile can be fragile they tend not to ship – or at least guarantee that it’ll end up all in one piece by the time it gets to you. Remodeling too? I’d love to know how it’s going!
